30th REUNION - by Gary Pina

More than 200 classmates, friends and teachers attended the 30th reunion of  the North Dallas High Class of '74 on Saturday, Sept. 25, at the Embassy Suites in Dallas.

Thanks to the everybody's generosity, the class raised more than $1,600 for the North Dallas High Booster Club. The proceeds will go toward buying new equipment for the athletic teams at North Dallas!

The reunion activities began with a happy-hour gathering on Friday night at the Embassy Suites, We had quite a few in attendance for a few drinks. The highlight was reading a proclamation from the Mayor's office of the City of Dallas that proclaimed Saturday, Sept. 25, as North Dallas High Class of 1974 Day,

On Saturday, we gathered for the reunion. We were caught off guard by the large number of people showing up at 7 p.m. but everything turned out OK. We had several teachers attend, including former football Coach Bill Russell; Mr. Joe Atkins, journalism/English teacher; Mr. Walter Dewar, Math  teacher and also soccer coach of the '74 North Dallas team that won the city title; Mr. William Mitchell, band instructor; and Mrs. Dorothy Wilson, bookkeeping teacher. Ms. Peggi Bailey-Coleman, one of our senior sponsors in '74, also made an appearance.

Our program, hosted by Gil Sandoval and Betty Lou Weaver Reed, included Martha Navarro recalling our departed classmates and teachers; Danny Chasney talking about the fabulous door prizes available; Benny Nash talking about the successful golf tournament on Sept. 11, and Gary and Mary Jane Pina reading the proclamation from the City of Dallas.

After dinner and the program, we moved to the ballroom for an evening of dancing with DJ Mike L., a '78 North Dallas graduate. The top door prize was a gas grill, which was won by Theresa Kysiak  Grimberg, a '74 graduate.

On Sunday, the class picnic was held at Lake Lewisville.

"What a great weekend," said Gary Pina, '74 class president and one of the leaders of the reunion committee. "Everybody had a great time, and we were also able to give back to the school."

Pina said the success of the event can be attributed to the Team Three-Oh Committee, which included Gilbert Sandoval, Richard Arechiga, Dolores Estrada Billings, Terry Byrd, Danny Chasney, John Chavez, Alex Dominguez,  Sharon Hatcher Steward, Sharon Thompson, Murray, Dubb Murrow, Benny Nash, Martha Navarro, Gary Pina, Mary Jane Herb Pina, Angie Rios, Linda Rodriguez, Adam Rogalla, Bettie Weaver Reed, and Vicki Palma Valderas.

Richard received an Associate of Arts from El Centro College in 1981 and an Emergency Medical Technician Certification, 1995, expired.  He spent one year in the USAF and 23 years with Dallas Independent School District.  His hobbies are the great outdoors and volunteering as an assistant troop leader for a girl scout troop in Carrollton-Farmers Branch, TX. Walt Surovik was his best bud but he hasn't seen or heard from him in ten years. If he had NDHS to take over again, he would take high school a bit more serious to get a higher GPA. Since January 05, 1999 Richard has been living with cancer as a brain tumor survivor.

28Apr01 - Kathy received her Associates Degree from City College of San Francisco. This was made possible through the use of the GI Bill earned by a 3 year stint in the U. S. Army. Her work career has been varied, but any jobs that allowed her to be of help to others were the most rewarding. She currently works for the National Credit Union Administration in Austin, Texas where she handles consumer concerns for an eleven state region and assists with the development of small income credit unions. She has 3 children, Tiffany, (a senior in 2001) Nolan, (class of 2003) and Travis (class of 2005). She feels very lucky to have been married to a soldier, allowing her the opportunity to stay home with them during their early years. Kathy is positive that SGM Kaloi and SSG Stroud of the ROTC program were prime influences for her destiny. They recognized and nurtured special abilities and guided her into becoming what is believed to be the 1st female ROTC BN Commander in the United States. She also feels indebted to her special friends who convinced her that she was a lousy swimmer. If allowed to do one thing differently, she would have waited for someone to ask her to the prom.
