Freid, M. Susan mfreid@dallasisd.org
11/11/2007 - Letter to Bulldog News from M. Susan Freid -  I can truly say that the Bulldog News is an inspiration to me and I look forward to the stories and snippets with each issue.  I am a 1968 graduate and loved my years at North Dallas.  My fellow classmates have remained active in the association:  Mike Lemmon is on the board, Mike Warlick (a descendent of the Cole family, whence Cole Avenue) organized our last reunion (35th) and Terri Taylor (a realtor in North Dallas) is a contributor to the Century Club.  We made memories that still bring joy when looking back in time.

After graduation I went off to college and when eventually finished, I spent over 25 years in the computer software industry.
This profession allowed me to travel extensively and to live well, but my dream was to retire from industry and teach.  After seeing North Dallas High highlighted on 60 Minutes one evening, my dream was further honed to include teaching at North Dallas, my alma mater.  After 9/11, when the bottom fell out of the computer industry, I was afforded my dream.  I now teach at North Dallas High School in the Mathematics Department.

Though the halls are virtually the same, the rules of “polite society” have altered considerably among the student body, so I received quite the culture shock when I entered the classroom after 35 years.
This is my fourth year and I would not go back to the business world for all the tea in China!  I must say, I love it and I love these kids.  My students face situations that we never even dreamed could possibly occur.  As a teacher, I face confrontations with my students that I never dreamed could possibly occur in a school environment, but I learn every day to deal in a productive way with these altercations.

My brother, Dana Long, another NDHS graduate (1966) was the pitcher on the baseball team and known in the Dallas Morning News and Times Herald for his ability to pitch a “no-hitter” and still lose the game – no, we were not known for our sports talent in the sixties either!
He calls me every Saturday after he reads the paper about the NDHS game to see if I have the athletes noted in the news in my classes.  The Bulldogs played his town’s (Kaufman) baseball team last year and I went with him to the game.  He was very torn at first about which team to cheer.  He played like Switzerland as the game began, but it was not long until the old Bulldog came out and he was routing for the orange and white!

I adore the recollections from your contributors that include a “teacher story”.
They inspire me and I share them with my fellow teachers.  Are you and the other alumni aware of how many alumni are teachers, administrators, or workers at the school?  I am only one of almost 20!!!  Just to name a few:  Mr. Luis Benavides was also a 1968 graduate and he heads the English Department and teaches English IV.  Mr. Arthur Cerda retired last year; he taught Health and was also a 1968 graduate.  His brother, Ernest Cerda (a 1967 graduate), is the school Historian – he and his camera never miss an event!!   Mrs. Sanjuana Casiano (class of 1987) teaches Algebra I and Pre-Calculus.  Mr. Jaime Hurtado (class of 1999) teaches Algebra II and Math Models.  Mr. Charles Johnson (class of 1988) is the head of security for the school and is assisted by Mr. Dodd (1987) another NDHS graduate.  Mr. Amador teaches Social Studies (class 2000).  Raphael Rodriquez is our Community Liaison and coach (class of 1970).  The office staff consists of NDHS graduates and the list goes on….  I would be surprised if another high school in our country had as active an alumni association or as loyal an alumni.

This new building project is a wonder.
All of the teachers have copies of the news article about the architect on their bulletin boards.  The students are excited.  The construction has begun.  We may be inconvenienced for a short time, but we are ready for the improvements.  I encourage you all to continue to support the bulldogs of the future and join us at the games if possible.  Our students need tutors and role models more than they need your dollars.  The task of teaching this student body is daunting, but possible.

I will end with a short story that happened this past Thursday night at Parent Conference.  A student visited me with his mother; of course he had to translate for us.  I was encouraging him to get on the Advanced Placement track and continue on to college.  I stopped to ask him, “You are going to college, aren’t you?”  He answered, “Yes.  I want to be a teacher and teach Geometry!”  I am his Geometry teacher.  I cannot tell the story without tears coming to my eyes.  No, teachers’ salaries are not among the highest and monetary bonuses are not something we can look forward to, but this young man’s comment was my bonus for the year and I could not ask for more.Sincerely, M. Susan Freid

After retirement: Video editing, documenting and distributing the works of Jan Cox,a current day Teacher, (one-who-knows what's-going-on)  Check it out on youtube.  Also Evoteck Hobbies: My Life's work is about Consciousness and understanding how life works - not theory, but seeing it with my own eyes - and nothing does what it purports to do. So relax, everything you know is wrong, and you can't take yourself seriously. Otherwise - The History Channel is Awesome, computers, video editing Influence:  Hollis Tapp - best teacher I ever had. math and physics. If I had not graduated early 1967 1/2, I would have become a physicist, but the math teacher I had in college was so bad I just dropped it. Things Different: Worked less, played more. I would have kept in touch with the following people: Friends: Manual Vasquez, Sharon Hodges, Bill Hays, Turk (Turkey) Carlos Saldivar, Bill Davis, Abraham Delgado, Rueben Aguilar, Sherry Atkinson, Charles Villareal and then, just out of curiosity - I would like to know if Michael Sosa ever invented anything. Comments My two years at NDHS were great. Burgers at the drug store, Charco's....My brother Don & I had a 1955 chevy dragster with cheater slicks and a functional scoop and LOTS of horsepower, and we tore up Charcos pullin wheelies on Friday night. Then I had to go and ruin it by graduating early in Summer school. I had gone to take a class in "computers", (256 BYTES of ram) and  the counselor informed me that all I needed was senior english and I could graduate .. and that was that. I was a year younger than my classmates, and now entering college at 16. Had a blast.

Mike and his wife, Jill, live in Coeur d' Alene, Idaho. They have .5 children. 4 live in Alaska, one in Florida.  After attending SMU and UT, Mike took a summer vacation to Alaska before his planned start of law school. After twenty years as a Trooper and surviving several plane crashes, shoot outs, and attacks by grizzly bears, He retired in 1996. Mike and his wife traveled around the western states after retirement and spent a winter in Corpus. After so many years in a cold climate, they couldn't handle the heat and humidity, so they are now leaving in Northern Idaho where Mike runs a small flying business with an amphibian plane. 3/30/2008 - Spouse_name: Widow

Family info: Two Children, Daniel, age 31, Monica, age 30. Two GrandChildren, Daniel, age 7, Selena, age 4.

Job info: Seems I have always worked in the Health Care field.  Mostly secretarial/administrative type work.  Worked at a Migrant Health Clinic on the Mexican Border for many years, and still have close friends there.

After retirement: I am only working part-time, as I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and it's increasingly harder to get around now, but I still drive and pretty much do as I please.

Hobbies:I have a cat to keep me company...her name is Chiquita and is not quite a yr old.  She is so funny and makes me laugh every day.  My son insists that she needs to have her own web page, but I think, nah!

Influence: As I said I lived on the Mexican Border for about 20 years.  Mama Foster would have been very proud of me, I can speak Spanish and make tortillas with the best of them.   Who ever would have thought it?  Not the people in my Spanish class, that's for sure!  Haha!

Things Different: If I had to repeat high school, I would have not quit band...I loved it, but couldn't handle all the conflicts involved.  Plus, I would have concentrated more on my studies...I don't feel that I was well  prepared for what I was going to do after school.

Friends: I really enjoyed my high school years.  Sandy Houk, and all the band people were my special friends, plus all the fun people in Mama Foster's Homeroom.

Comments:Love & Honor to North Dallas, always!
