In Memory of Pat Annett

by Danny Boyce ' 65

In the July 2005 issue of the Bulldog News, I was saddened to read that my friend and sometimes running mate (Pat Annett) had recently passed away.  I have such fond memories of Pat.

Pat was a rarity in high school and we became good friends.  I remember on day we were talking about engines in our autos and he asked me what size engine I had in my ' 54 Ford.  I told him 240 cubic inches and Pat said," don't you mean 239?"  I said yes, you are right.  He knew more about hot rod engines than anyone I knew at that time.

Pat and I went to more than one Texas-OU rally at downtown Dallas on the Friday night before the big game and he was such a joy to be around.

Although I have not seen Pat since we graduated, I have always held memories of him and many others from North Dallas High close to my heart as those days were so very special to me.

In memory of Pat Annett, I am sending a donation to the Century Club in his name.

May God bless his family and his memory.

40th reunion is scheduled for October 22, 2005 at the Sokol Athletic Center off Greenville and Walnut Hill Lane.

3/22/2008 - Spouse name: Bert Family info: I have one son - he's 41 now.  No grandchildren, I'm sorry to say.  Job info: Currently working for the Texas Board of Architectural Examiners - maintaining the web site. After retirement: I hope we can purchase a small motor home and travel to some of the national parks, and find some of those places where they let you dig for gems.  However, that won't be happening at $4 a gallon.  Maybe gardening . .  Hobbies:Hobbies, I do design personal web sites on the side,  if you're curious take a look a www.rebelyell1.com , www.masons189.com , www.customrods.ws  - I found the one for custom rods on gregg's list - this guy wanted a 3-page site in exchange for a custom made fishing rod.  I can vouch for him - my fishing rod is NICE.  I love to fish for king and ling so I put an add on Gregg's list to design a web site in exchange for a deep sea fishing trip; SURPRISE, I'll be out in the Gulf of Mexico for 2 days in mid-July.  (wish me luck)  Rebel Yell was my first attempt - and it's my husband's site.  He is a hard core civil war reinactor - he dresses up in the rebel garb and plays soldier every chance he gets.  I also make angels, and this year I made pillows with family photos printed into the fabric for close family members.  I can't seem to settle in to just one hobby - after 6 to 12 months, my interest veers off to something new - just drives my husband crazy but he supports me and encourages me every time.   Things Different:I would have joined the choir and theater groups. Friends: Karen Prinz, Lana Anderson, Mary Jane Avon, Robert Starnes, and David York.  I attended Maple Lawn Elementary and Rusk Junior High with so many who attended North DAllas - and I wish I had gotten to know all of them better.  Comments: Where have the years gone?  I don't feel 61 years old.

Pat has 2 daughters and 3 granddaughters. Her oldest daughter is Labor/Delivery nurse and her youngest graduated from high school in 1999, attending NCTC.  Pat has worked in construction since 1970. She moved to Lewisville in 1991 and is presently working for a contractor there. Her interests include sewing, cross stitch and needlepoint. She says that high school was just plain fun. She didn't  think she really thought about influences then, only after she was out did she think of things she  should have done differently. She would have widened her circle of friends.

Hobbies: My husband and I love to go to the Rangers games, not because they are a winning team, but we like baseball, also we like to travel to a different part of the USA, every year. Am looking forward to the '64 reunion to see familiar faces. I loved the whole ND scene - it was a funky education, but it formed a "spunky" me. And, although she was cranky and extremely opinionated, I owe a lot to Ms. Clark for encouraging my writing talents and to Ms. Holbrook for pushing me beyond "status quo". Things Different: Get more involved! I would have loved to be in a play, but was too shy. Comments: Love to hear from any of my old classmates! Who's planning our 40th reunion? It's coming SOON!!!

7/31/2008 -  Spouse name: Al College info: Bachelor of Arts, North Texas State University Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies, University of Texas at Tyler  Family info: I have two teen age grandchildren. Meghan is graduating this year from McNeil H.S. in Austin. Andrew is entering the 8th grade and Allison Grace should be born today, but we only have 2 hours to go so she'd better hurry!!! Job info: I taught for art for 24 years in East Texas; 14 yrs at Jacksonville H.S., 3 yrs at Rains H.S. at Emory, TX, and 6 yrs at Hogg M.S. in Tyler, followed by 1 yr at Polk M.S. in Carrollton, TX, and 1 yr at Grapevine H.S. I also taught Publications, English, and Journalism in my career. After retirement: I took retirement after 24 yrs, went back to school to get training as a graphic designer. I started a graphic design business. Just recently, I have begun working as a trading assistant on Ebay and do Estate sales. Hobbies: Photography and ballroom dancing Influence: Mr Darr was the art teacher at N.D. He told my parents that I was one of his most talented students. It was in his classroom that I cultivated my graphic and flirting skills. I still use the graphic skills, but have long retired my flirting. Things Different: No, but I would have tried out for drill team at Rusk J.H. if I had it to do over, so that possibly I could have had a better chance of getting into the drill team with some of my friends, namely Mary Ann Castro and Sylvia Gutierrez. Friends: Other friends were Juanita Chavoya, Irene Zuniga, Ramona Ojeda and Esther Lara. Comments: I later returned to N.D. for student teaching, but ND had totally changed with the times -- the school's ethnic ratios then were 1/3 Caucasian, 1/3 Hispanic, and 1/3 African-American. Booker T. Washington H.S. had just closed and African-Americans and Hispanics were rivaling for ethnic control -- it was quite interesting! Every morning, students were forced to enter the building through a metal detector because of racial strife. That was in 1970 and it was the first machine of its kind for the Dallas ISD.

2/15/05 - Spouse_name: Joe Janca (deceased/2003) Family info: I was privileged to have 3 daughters and 1 son, who have blessed me with a total of 13 grandchildren, 7 boys and 6 girls. Job info: I was the "in house" partner of an office furniture dealership for 11 years, but decided the stress was not worth it. I've been employed by a commercial mill worker (custom cabinet maker) for over 10 years and probably have the least stressful job in the world. After retirement: Retire? What's that?! Probably not in this lifetime. Hobbies: I am an avid reader and I still sing a great deal. I spend most of my spare time with my children and grandchildren. They are the most fun in the world. Influence: I still keep in close touch with my two dearest, forever friends. Things Different: If I could go back, I would definitely participate in more of the extra-curricular activities and hopefully not be quite so shy. While I knew a lot of people by name, I really wouldn't call them friends, and I'd like to change that. Comments: High school was great time. I wouldn't have missed it for the world.
