From Virgil Stephens - "I was saddened to see in the Thursday paper (Dallas Morning News, August 1st) where Dr. Bob Swepston had passed away at the age of 68. Bob was a member of the June class of '51 as I was. Dr. Swepston was living in Plano and active with his dentistry practice. The obituary didn't mention a cause of death." Virgil talked to Emily Mitchell and she indicated that the cause was a heart attach while Bob was on vacation in Arizona. |

Elaine teaches at Northwood University and has summers off so we have been to many countries in Europe and plan to see more soon. Hobbies: Influence: Mrs. Dice opened a new door in math for me. Something clicked after that that helped me in college and work. Things Would Do Different: Comments: When I was a freshman at A&M I came down with polio and was hospitalized for several months. During that time I received a card signed by many, many classmates at North Dallas. That meant so much to me and I never got to thank them. Thank you all very much. P.S. I recovered fully. |
| ( Bridges) Brock Bettie, Jean |
105 E. Signal Hill Dr. |
03/10/01 - Bettie and her husband, Gene Brock, live in Ruidoso, NM. Bettie attended the Southwestern AG University, University of Texas, took nursing home administration at Northlake College, and has her real estate license. Bettie has a daughter born in 1963, Jonna Burgess, who married Steven Irick in 1988. Jonna and Steve are the parents of one son, Jonathan Irick born 1994. Steven and Jonna live in Alamogordo, NM where Steve is a Manager at Desert Sun Motor Company and Jonna teaches at a private school where Jonathan is a 1st grader. Bettie has one son, Jon Burgess who trains cutting horses in Stephenville, Texas. His is married to Traci and they have two children, Tasha Renee age 10 and Justin Lee age 4. Both Jon and Traci show cutting horses across the country and the grandchildren are following in their parents footsteps. In August of 1952 Bettie married a rancher from Graham, Texas. The wedding took place in Dallas and she was delighted to have two of her classmates, Phyllis Chitwood Savell and Avonne Raley Bullock in her wedding party. Bettie says that life on a West Texas ranch was fun and exciting. Her husband decided to go into the Ministry and they went back to college and he was ordained in 1959. They pastored churches in Palo Alto, CA, Oldton and Albany, Texas, Queens, NY, and Kansas City, Kansas. Their Christian service led them into the nursing home business and they owned and operated the Burmont Nursing Homes in several cities in Texas for many years. In 1977, Bettie married her second husband, Gene T. Brock, who owned the Gene Brock Ford Lincoln and Mercury stores in Alamogordo and Ruidoso, NM. Gene has two grown children, Trudy Lynn Routh of Bedford, Texas and Craig Brock of Tulsa, Ok. He has no grandchildren but is PawPaw to Bettie's three and they adore him. In 1981 they sold the auto dealerships and moved to Dallas to be near Bettie's aging parents. They both were Realtors with Henry S. Miller in Las Colinas and was excited to be in on the early day sales and development of the Keller, Colleyville, Grapevine and Las Colinas areas. Since semi-retiring in 1992, they are both employed at Christ Community Church in Alamogordo, NM where Gene is the Business Manager, serves on our Church Board and also on their Christian school board. Bettie serves on the Pastoral Staff as Activities Director, Counselor, Women's Ministry liaison to the Pastor, Co-Director (along with her husband) for a large outreach group, Divorce Care, which meets each week. Their greatest joy is their Friday night Mountain TLC Group. It is a cell group that comes to their home for Dinner at 6:30 and then a Bible Study. The group is open to any couple that would like to attend and they usually average 14 in attendance. Bettie tries to cook a wonderful dinner for them each week and the food and fellowship is great! They do not want the word "retire" in our vocabulary. They plan to work as long as they have the health and strength. Bettie's hobbies are horses and horseshows, cooking, genealogy, antique auctions, traveling, fishing and music. Bettie says her biggest influence came from Mrs. Davies her Home Economics teacher who greatly influenced her desire to prepare wonderful and nutritious meals. She thought Mr. Pipes was a saint until several of she and her friends skipped school to go to the Majestic Theater to see a great movie and were caught. Their Algebra teacher would not allow them to repeat a test they missed that day and they all got a zero. She doesn't remember who all skipped school but she never did that again! She especially enjoyed performing in a western operetta her junior year. What Fun! The pep rallies and football games at DalHi (Cobb Stadium) were outstanding and she remembers some of the cheerleaders, Bobby Munday, Jerry Patrick, Norma Mac, Betty Miller, etc. Their lunch hours were fun with. Avonne Raley, Phyllis Chitwood, Jessie Speck etc. just sitting on the school lawn and relating their latest heartthrobs. O.S.s was a highlight. Their special dates were at the Italian village on Oak Lawn. Great Days! If she had NDHS to do over again, she would spend more time with her classmates and school activities and less time working on projects that were just a passing fancy! Her days at North Dallas High are among her most treasured memories! She hopes to attend a meeting are reunion in the future! She appreciates all of the classmates who keep the class together! It would be great to have photos from the year book on the web page for those who do not have an Annual or a good memory . It would be nice to put a face with a name! |

02/04/02 - Spouse name: Dan Proffitt. . College info: Preston Road School of Preaching for Wives. Abilene Independent School District Instruction classes. Family info: We have three children and four grandchildren. The oldest son teaches at Abilene High School. The youngest son works for the prison and attends college. Our daughter works as an accounts payable person and attends NMSU in Albuquerque to obtain a CPA license. She will take the first part of her exam in November. Our grandchildren are ages 22, 13, 11, and 7. Our daughter is our middle child. Our children range in age from 45 to 27. Job info: I worked as a secretary, a teacher's aid and as a cafeteria monitor. I enjoyed my life as the wife of a preacher. I was a stay at home mom until our youngest son was 11 years of age. Pursuits after retirement: We have traveled extensively in the United States. We have followed the Lewis and Clark Trail from Pierre, South Dakota to the west coast. We plan to start in Pierre and travel the trail east. We volunteer at the food bank. And do other volunteer work when called upon. Hobbies: We like to hike, camp out in our travel trailer, entertain grandchildren, and enjoy crafts. At the present time I am quilting a quilt that was pieced by my grandmother in 1947. I lived with her at the time. She passed away in 1948 and the quilt top wasn't completed but I am quilting it just the way she left it because it was almost finished. I acquired the quilt top in 1995. It is taking a long time to quilt it because it was pieced in the postage stamp pattern and I am quilting it in the same way. I also oil paint. Influence: Mr. Hardy - He taught me not to be afraid of everybody. Mrs. Bradford who instilled in me a love of art and crafts. Mr. Hayes who taught me confidence. Things Would Do Different: I would study harder. And if possible join clubs and participate more in extracurricular activities. Circumstances prevented me from doing so then so circumstances would have to be different for me to fulfill this desire. Comments: I enjoyed North Dallas High School even though I felt out of place due to our living conditions and those of most of the students there until my senior year in high school when I decided that my life didn't depend on circumstances or other people's wealth but on my own value as a citizen. North Dallas was a good place to learn many things especially how to live in society with all types of people. |

| Kelman, Lloyd | CaptKelman@aol.com |
After graduating from North Dallas, Lloyd got a degree in electrical engineering from UT at Austin. He worked for Douglas Aircraft in L.A. for a year and then served in the Air Force for two years at Cape Canaveral. While at the Cape, he saw Shepard and Glenn go up and quite a few rockets come rapidly down. After that he stayed in Florida and worked first at the Cape and then for a succession of small companies in Ft. Lauderdale. All this time he was indulging his passion for skin diving and made a number of trips to the Bahamas in his 19 ft. boat for diving and spear fishing. On one trip to Walker's Cay he met Bebe Rebozo so thereafter he could introduce himself saying, "Shake the hand that shook the hand that shook the hand of Richard M. Nixon." In Ft. Lauderdale Lloyd met his future wife, Linda. After making sure she liked his two dogs (and vice versa), they got married in 1969. In 1971 their twin boys, Glenn and Wesley were born. A few years later the small (5 employees) company Lloyd worked for went belly up and he went back to Dallas. After 4 years with a well logging outfit he moved to Seattle in order to get back to salt water. In Seattle he worked at Boeing on various research projects; a take off abort monitor, flat panel cockpit displays, and an aircraft data transmission device. He also developed an interest in sailing and bought a 17ft. sailboat. In 1994 Lloyd retired and moved to Stuart, FL. Where he continues to sail, dive, and spend quality time with my dogs. At present Glenn is with a software firm in San Francisco and Wesley is in Yale Law School. Since his wife still works as a nurse, he tries to help out by doing the various house renovations she dreams up and by washing the dishes. In any case, filling the time vacated by making a living is not a problem because his long association with the dogs has lowered his stimulation threshold to about the same level as theirs, so the days pass quickly. |

Virgil went to work for Southwest Bell Telephone a week and two days after graduating. He had already put in to attend North Texas State in Denton but when the job opportunity came my way he decided to take it. It was offered on the contingency that it would be a permanent thing and he wouldn't be quitting to attend college in a few months. The reason, the job required extensive training. It worked out well for him as he continued my career with the company for 38 1/2 years. During that time he worked mostly inside central offices but did spend one year doing outside work. he finished my job being in charge of the power supply and emergency engines for all the phones in downtown Dallas. He was on duty the day the Baker Hotel was blown down to make room for what is now Bell Plaza. That was quite a site and we had no idea what effect it would have on phone service for all of downtown. Oh, it went well and we didn't lose a single phone. Virgil retired in 1990 and since then have done some traveling. He has made three trips to Canada. His time is now mostly occupied taking care of his home and doing some computer Some years ago he did some Corvette racing. He has owned four Corvettes but none at the present. His main hobby at the present is working on the computer. When asked about how he was influenced at NDHS, Virgil replied "Hmm. This was the hardest part to answer but reflecting back I think the things from my days at NDHS that most influenced my life were that it taught me to learn, question within reason and that most things are possible with education and hard work." Virgil would be happy to hear from any other 1951 graduates. |
